About these supports
SIL, STA and MTA are different types of disability support and accommodation arrangements. The right option will depend on your individual circumstances, support needs, goals, NDIS plan and what funding and options are available to you.
Supported Independent Living (SIL)
Supported Independent Living, commonly called SIL, is support provided to help a person live as independently as possible in their home.
SIL may include help with everyday activities such as personal care, preparing meals, household tasks, developing daily living skills and building routines. The level of support provided depends on the person’s individual needs.
SIL is generally designed for people who need regular support throughout the day and may include overnight support.
It is important to understand that SIL is the support provided in the home—it is not the house itself. Accommodation and SIL supports are separate considerations.
Short Term Accommodation (STA)
Short Term Accommodation, or STA, provides short-term disability support away from your usual home where it meets the relevant NDIS funding requirements.
Depending on your circumstances and approved funding, STA may provide an opportunity to spend time in a different environment while receiving the disability supports you need.
It can also provide a temporary change in support arrangements for participants and their informal supports.
STA is not automatically available to every NDIS participant. Whether it can be funded depends on your individual circumstances and the NDIS funding criteria that apply.
Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)
Medium Term Accommodation, or MTA, is temporary accommodation for eligible participants who need somewhere to live while waiting for a longer-term disability-related housing solution to become available.
For example, a person may need MTA while waiting for appropriate home modifications or another longer-term housing arrangement to be ready.
MTA is intended as an interim housing solution, rather than permanent accommodation. Eligibility and funding depend on the participant’s individual circumstances and NDIS plan.
Which option is right for me?
You do not need to work this out on your own.
The most appropriate option depends on factors such as your support needs, living situation, goals, existing supports and NDIS funding.
At The Diverse Collective, we can talk with you, your family, Support Coordinator or other people you choose about the supports you are looking for and whether we may be able to assist.
